Nickkita was born in Trinidad and lived there for ten years. She also lived in the smaller island of Tobago for five years. Nicky grew up playing soccer, field and indoor hockey (having no ice in the Caribbean), tennis and karate. She volunteered for the Youth Cadet Force when she was 11, and acheived the rank of Sargeant by the age of 14 (average age being 18). Nicky emigrated to the U.S. soon after, in 2001. She lived in Queens and attended Richmond Hill High School, where she played soccer on a girls team, tennis, and bowling. After moving to Brighton Beach and transferring to Lincoln High School, Nicky tried out for the boys soccer team (there being no girls team) and made the team. Nickey also played tennis for Lincoln.
Nicky graduated from Lincoln High and currently attends Brooklyn College. During her first semester, in November 2004, she started ice hockey, in which she had been interested since the age of 16. From November to March, she played in Prospect Park with the Brooklyn Blades' coed adult clinic. After the winter season with the Brooklyn Blades, Nicky didn't want to stop playing, so she joined the NYCGHA, which she had heard about from Jeff Kagan when he was promoting sports at a LGBT college conference. Nicky adds, "Without help from Jeff Kagan, Sky Rink, and Ed Fusco, it would have been impossible for me to get started in Ice hockey. Thanks a lot guys!"
